COM TRUISE - “OPEN”

It is definitely hard to refrain from singing RCRD LBL’s praises when they are able to get their hands on free MP3’s that can’t be found elsewhere. Seth Haley, the man behind the intergalactic downtempo machine that is Com Truise, can be notoriously tight-fisted with his jams sometimes. I really don’t blame him, given the quality of the tunes, along with the unique artwork and backstory that often accompanies each one of them. Well, if you follow Ghostly International or anything of the retro futuristic sort, you’ll already be in the know about Truise’s upcoming July release In Decay. Via Ghostly, of course, this collection of previously unreleased pre-Cyanide Sisters EP recordings is bound to astound, especially those of you who show a latent tendency toward the “mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk”. The appropriately titled opener track, “Open”, is a familiar vibe: computer programs, thin laser-like sheets of vintage synth, bombastic drums stabs, and sassy basslines flanged into infinity. Caught between the past and the future, which option will our hero choose? To delve into the past, altering space and time itself, or to leap far into the unknown future? Only you, dear listener, can make that decision, so do tha right thing, and thank your lucky stars for sites like RCRD LBL that can get their hands on nice things like this phenomenal taste of Com Truise’s upcoming In Decay, out on July 27th, 2012.

OMBRE - "CARA FALSA" →

Well, I really wanted to embed the RCRD LBL player above, but Tumblr is a motherfucking piece of shit. Moving right along, this impromptu duo of solo artists is apparently such a new thing that it’s still pretty much breaking news. OMBRE, an ambient electronic act with shoegaze influences, is made up of dreampop goddess Julianna Barwick and Ecuadorean singer/songwriter Helado Negro. Apparently, the two recently met, and in grand Avey Tare/Kría Brekkan style, decided it best to put each of their respective best feet forward toward a common goal: a debut album expected out on August 27th via Asthmatic Kitty. The first single from Believe You Me was featured today on RCRD LBL, making waves in our minds with its sentimental synth atmospherics, Barwick’s spiritually ethereal lullaby, and a resolute beat that keeps all of the aura in line. The sound of OMBRE, just from this brief encounter, really reminds me of what I imagine a Björk song would sound like if Hammock were doing the backing instrumentation. Lovers of ambient music, shoegaze, and emotional electronica, do tha right thing and grab the free MP3 below. Come August 27th, be prepared to reward Barwick and Negro for the ephemeral magic.

ELITE GYMNASTICS - “LIFE/TRAP”

Some sources of phresh new jams are like a box of chocolates: you never know quite what you’re gonna get, and RCRD LBL is one of those types of repositories. Fans of the site can’t help but notice the sheer variety of genres of music represented by the multitude of writers and submitters that Buzzmedia, Inc. employs. Sometimes what you find might be rough, and other times you may just find the diamond of the year. Today, RCRD LBL posted the intro track from Elite Gymnastics’ upcoming limited Ruin 4 package, entitled “Life/Trap”, and it is definitely of the precious stone variety. The epic song leads right in with a percussion track seemingly taken straight from the sessions of a mid-nineties Aphex Twin or Squarepusher album. Very shortly thereafter, the hauntingly melancholy vocals kick in and carry the weight of the jam for the rest of the six bombastic minutes that make up “Life/Trap”. Elite Gymnastics successfully keeps up the tension with a loud-soft dynamic and weaves in some jungle percussion towards the outro in grand CFCF style, which both works well and makes sense, being that the two acts collaborate often. Do tha right thing, and sign up for a free RCRD LBL account today, and grab this free Elite Gymnastics opus, then treat yourself to their extensive back catalog of free downloads and links to further freebies. Also, check out Elite GymnasticsRuin 4 package, which comes complete with “a high quality t-shirt (XL only), and a CD compilation featuring remixes of tracks from RUIN as well as unheard originals from the RUIN sessions”, out on May 8th via Acéphale. Without further ado, here are the boys at McDonald’s:

BEAR IN HEAVEN - “SINFUL NATURE”

Count me unfortunately among those who have yet to acquire the leak of Bear in Heaven’s newest effort I Love You, It’s Cool. Alas, I am of the old school group of people who prefer to wait in eager anticipation for the release date proper. Also, I’ve been spending all of my funds on pitch-shifting startup artists like Stumbleine and Sun Glitters lately, so I haven’t gotten an earful of the more radio-friendly hipster drivel yet. If the first single “The Reflection of You” is proven to be an apt reflection of the whole of the album, then you can sign me up wholly. RCRD LBL just today got their grubby little hands on yet another leaked track from said upcoming marvel, this one being titled “Sinful Nature”. Now, the fellas in Bear in Heaven have never been the type to shy away from the nitty gritty of things, but judging from the overall tone of this more brooding track, I Love You, It’s Cool seems to be taking the form of a more hi-fi and user-friendly release that will hopefully up the group’s ante influentially. Do tha right thing, and check this free MP3 download of Bear in Heaven’s second single, “Sinful Nature”, here at RCRD LBL. Save some room, of course, for the real stuff on April 3rd, when I Love You, It’s Cool is given its real deal release.

RALEIGH MONCRIEF - “LAMENT FOR MORNING (WHITE HORSE MIX)”

RCRD LBL just posted a stellar White Horse re-imagining of Raleigh Moncrief’s vocal experiment “Lament for Morning”. The original version of this electronic song utilizes quite a bit of those glitchy editing techniques to great effect, crafting a whirlwind of triumph out of what appears to be just one vocal take. White Horse then builds upon the original mix with even more clever edits that are simply not to be missed. Not quite sure who this Chelsea Wolfe bitch is, but I guess we coo.

Also, Raleigh Moncreif kinda looks like Adrien Brody. For fans of Björk, Deastro, Lusine, etc.

Neon Indian Side Project VEGA →

Okay, so I knew that in the past Alan Palomo had been the front man for a group called Ghosthustler (and made awful music, by the way). This, however, is news to me: Alan Palomo now has a synthpop side project called VEGA, and boy is it good. Though all I’ve been able to dredge up so far (mostly due to laziness) is this MP3 via RCRD LBL’s recent Neon Indian guest playlist, apparently the source of this song is an EP entitled “Well Known Pleasures”. Dancier and more hi-fi than Palomo’s repertoire under the moniker of Neon Indian, I personally like the direction that he’s taking this aspect of his sound and hope that he continues to explore that side of his psyche. Do tha right thing and grab this free download of “No Reasons”, even if it requires that you sign up for a free account.

Oh, on a sidenote, I have a friend who is friends with Al Pal, and I may get to hang out with them and meet him after Fun Fun Fun Fest in Austin this year. OMG I’M TOTES EXCITEDDDDD LAWL

Onra’s “Change of Heart”

Admittedly, I don’t know much about Onra, but this track has been making the rounds on sites like RCRD LBL, LYFSTYL, and XLR8R. On a side note, why do hipsters love capitalization so much? Anyways, I love the recently collectively acquired taste in the underground for music that is produced in such a way that makes it sound older than it really is. Pioneered by artists like 18 Carat Affair, Com Truise, and Onra, it’s the aural equivalent of lomo photography, in my opinion, in that it artificially ages the sound until it is so fraught with technical difficulty that it oddly then takes on a much more artistic and nostalgic form. It just goes to show that true beauty really can only be found in imperfection. Enjoy Onra’s “Change of Heart” and keep your eyes and ears peeled for more information about this prolific electro-funk producer in the near future.

TSQ VOL FOUR: ARRIVAL A →

This monthly batch of the Tiananmen Square Dance blog’s recent musical discoveries is one of my favorites so far. Pulling from solid sources like iso50, LYFSTYL, and RCRD LBL, this mix is a lot more ambient and electronic than some of the last few. “TSQ VOL FOUR: ARRIVAL A” takes off immediately with some hip electronic jams, sustaining the pace for a few tracks when, subtly, a funkified, retro turn is taken. The exoticism gives way to psychedelic ambiance a few tunes later, which in turn, plunges into a decidedly moody lull, giving way shortly to an earnest meditation on quiet desperation. An hour and some change later, after a cry for help towards the end, “ARRIVAL A” finishes with an apocalyptic conclusion. Do tha right thing, and take time out of your busy vanilla schedule for this collection of the freshest jams by clicking here to download.

TSQ VOL THREE →

Are you ready for me to shit out another eighty-minute batch of pure musical goodness? Aggregating the best of the best music I have stumbled across (often via RCRD LBL, Flux-Rad, or iso50) during the past month, I give you Tiananmen Square Dance’s third installment in our monthly mix series. This particular playlist starts out pretty slammin’, with some hip chillwave and glo-fi tunes. At about halfway through, though, I start slowing it down, with more slow or muted meditations. This one’s not to be missed. It’s like a patchwork quilt: it’s got everything. So do tha right thing and download the mix here so you can make up for what you may have missed. Since Rapidshare is weird, please take note that in order to download the .ZIP of the mix, you will need to scroll down and hit the button on the lower right that says “I want to wait”, and then you will probably have to wait five minutes or so to download it, but it’s well worth it.
