SAINT PEPSI - “BALANCING TOWERS”

AMDiscs is a bedroom record label known (along with Beer on the Rug and Fortune 500) for its expanding portfolio of artists and releases in the vaporwave vein. Featured on AMDiscs2013 compilation, this particular jam by Saint Pepsi is of course no exception to that generalization. Saint Pepsi seems to be the new flavor of the month, especially among followers of that incredibly weird but incredibly chill sounding microgenre of experimental electronic music. “Balancing Towers” is essentially just chopped and screwed early 80’s synth-funk, but the effect on the subconscious that this increasingly popular slice of VHS-wave has is definitely noteworthy. Where witch house once turned culture on its head with its chopped and screwed covers of pop hits, the vaporwave vibe of artists like Miami Vice and Vektroid crafts a particularly sterile retro-futuristic vision. With “Balancing Towers”, Saint Pepsi simultaneously reminds us of the duality of high class living with vintage bassline, glittering electric piano, and soulful musing. Despite the nostalgic smell of success present in the slow jam, one is unable to shake the sneaking feeling that’s all just a pixelated house of cards, waiting to crash like a cocaine-fueled stock market bought and sold exclusively by labor saving devices. Do tha right thing, and grab a free MP3 download of Saint Pepsi’s smooth retro track “Balancing Towers”. Afterwards, check out the rest of his repertoire, or definitely check out AMDiscs2013 playlist for more similar songs.

SANGO X ZANDSHE - “1•2”

We had never heard of Sango x Zandshe until just the other day, but they sure are a match made in heaven. Apparently, Sango does the beats, and Zandshe supplies the vocalization to the dynamic digital duo’s 2012 debut album, entitled . “1•2” kicks off slowly and sentimentally with a light, sensual synth lick straight out of a laid-back Tokimonsta jam. Synth atmospherics and a subtle beat back sincere, impassioned vocals that are reminiscent of the odd James & Evander tune. The digital effects, the gentle ambiance, and the vaguely neo-R&B world vibe of the track are what make Sango x Zandshe’s “1•2” a real winner. Fans of Race of Robots, Toro y Moi, or Underwater Seacreatures will appreciate the real chill urban tone that is at play here. So do tha right thing, and grab a free MP3 download of Sango x Zandshe’s “1•2” before the mood passes. Afterwards, dig into the rest of for four more must-hear experimental pop collaborations.

Tsq Vol II-8 →

It’s mix day, guys! This has been a very good month for us at Tiananmen Square Dance, so we’re very proud to bring this great collection of jams to the table. Featuring a special mixture of brand new singles that have been trending throughout the hipster blogosphere and old favorites that we’d like to revisit, Tsq Vol II-8 is sure to please those of you that are enthusiastically riding the new wave of electronic music. The playlist kicks off with a retro bang, courtesy of a little-known classic by Games, followed by a handful of brand new bangers, including a dream pop single from the upcoming Letting Up Despite Great Faults full-length. After a very chill entry by Underwater Seacreatures, the mixtape takes on a decidedly non-Western tone, featuring all new IDM and witch house tracks by Teengirl Fantasy, Slow Magic, and Fishing. After that movement, Vol II-8 delves into melodramatic territory, most notably breaking hearts with Teams’ vintage wall-of-sound approach in “Whxt Txrns U Xn?” and Krusht’s overly emotional single “Everything Is Beautiful”, which is cut from his upcoming album as well. The remainder of the mix is all midnight synthwave (Beaumont, Wayphaser), a standout selection from Collarbones’ recent release, and a frozen synthpop song by Future Unlimited to lead us out. Do tha right thing, and grab a free download of Tsq Vol II-8 via this Zippyshare link, or stream it via Bandcamp if you prefer not to clog up your hard drive with phresh new beatz. Either way, though, make note of the vibes you hear that you like and follow those artists. Check out their Bandcamp pages and Soundcloud pages, follow their Twitters, buy their albums and merch, and recommend their work to your friends. Of course, we’d be honored if you did the same with Tiananmen Square Dance, but let’s give credit where that credit is due, right? Enjoy Tsq Vol II-8, and message us if you’d like us to release a small collection of the jams that didn’t quite make it to the mix. All it takes is one request.

GAMES - “EVERYTHING IS WORKING”

Games, Joel Ford and Daniel Lopatin’s previous project, put out a 7” single around the time that an EP called That We Can Play came out a couple of years ago, and we totes missed both. What a shame, considering how smooth and hypnotic their jams are compared to the newest iterations of chill electronic tunes. This particular track, entitled “Everything Is Working”, came on while we were exploring our new favorite streaming site, Songza, and it was love at first listen. Gossamer vocal samples flit straight from a page of Clams Casino’s playbook into poignant CFCF-esque piano and sheets of ambient synth leads, punctuated by subtle, twinkling beats and more agressive piano stabs during the latter half of the song. For being part of a 2010 release, Games’ “Everything Is Working” seems to indicate that Ford and Lopatin really have a handle on how to churn out suave, but dark deep house/downtempo. Established in 1994, apparently the duo met in 6th grade and shortly thereafter started playing synth in Lopatin’s basement opposite each other. Do tha right thing, and snatch up Pitchfork’s free MP3 download of “Everything Is Working”, and then see if you can find a copy of GamesEverything Is Working 7” or the That We Can Play EP posthaste via iTunes, Amazon, or Hippos in Tanks, if you like the sound of the new wave of experimental R&B.

Tsq Vol II-6 →

This month’s special collection of favorite finds is now out for free download and stream. Some of the featured jams are recent releases (Summer of Haze, Puro Instinct, Lust), while others are just tunes we apparently missed and had to dredge up, only to be delighted by their quality (Gauntlet Hair, Echo Shade, Elite Gymnastics). We’ve been switching gears lately in our eternal search for legit chill tracks, so bear with us if you notice a distinct change in the tone of this month’s mix. While overall quite uniform in sound, the first several tracks go off with a bang, of course, headlined by Gauntlet Hair’s anthemic “Mop It Up”, Selva Oscura’s orgasmic “Canopy Wake”, and Puro Instinct’s Balearic “Dream Lover”. We’re still repping the classic chillwave vibes on the playlist, though, as evidenced by the abundance of lo-fi retro synth-wave that takes up the middle section (and the lion’s share) of Vol II-6 . Pay special attention to Stoner Showers’ vintage-tinged “Give Me a Chance”, Vektroid’s garbled, computer-esque “Tahiti TV”, and Dreams West’s ghettoblasted “Super Gran Turismo”. It gets a little dark towards the end, so we hope you’ll hang on for the home stretch, because there’s a mournful version of Elite Gymnastics’ “Here, in Heaven” and a rare early glimpse of the death-rattle of a title track from Holy Other’s upcoming LP that are both easily capstones of the mixtape. There’s fun to be had with the newest eighty-minute mix that we’ve managed to curate, so do tha right thing and grab your free copy of Tsq Vol 11-6  here, or stream it for free via our Bandcamp page. If you’re music hoarders like us, though, just download the damn thing. Also, as always, we urge you to donate your money to the artists represented above and below by buying their music or merch at live shows. Nothing good is free, so support independent electronic music directly, if you like what you hear. Au revoir!

ONTHE88 - “Light Through Water”

Over time, various mavens of real chill electronic music, like ISO50 and Hearing Gold, turned us on to 22-year old Los Angeles native ONTHE88’s unique variety of retro midnight driving jams. Needless to say, we ran with it. After a bit of internet spelunking, we happened upon this tiny teaser of a tune by him called “Light Through Water”. Espousing ONTHE88’s patented brand of warbling chillwave, this minute-long closer track from this month’s collection of old tracks (entitled Dingy Dreams) sounds exactly like what its title evokes, serving as just a small smackerel of what the rest of the free outing has to offer. Take its stammering trip-hop tempo, its echoing vocalization, and its melted-cassette-tape-atop-the-dashboard synth tones for they’re worth: a brief glimpse down the highway that he invites you to travel in tandem with him. Do tha right thing, and grab the free audio outro below, and follow the palm tree fringed freeway on over to this professional escapist’s Bandcamp for the rest of his free album Dingy Dreams, if you’re so inclined.

This past month has been one of the greatest times I have had in a while, with regards to the music hunt. Not only have I had the pleasure of acquiring some really splendid full-lengths and EP’s, but I came across a multitude of great artists that I had never before heard, along with wonderful new work by artists with which I am already familiar. It seems that the Summer season really is the hot spot for chillwave and glo-fi-esque music. “Tsq Vol II-3”, the third installment of the second volume of Tiananmen Square Dance’s monthly mix series, is home to a handful of heart-stoppers and tear-jerkers, but for the most part is populated by quiet, chill mood music. It is probably one of the most uniform in sound of all of the playlists that have been released by us, comprised entirely of chillwave, glo-fi, downtempo, experimental pop, underground hip-hop, and ambient music. I am very happy with the solidarity in sound and tone prevalent in this month’s mixtape, but there are definitely some serious cornerstone jams that are not to be missed on “Tsq Vol II-3”. Exeter’s edit of The-Dream’s “Fast Car” starts the mix out with a light and sassy R&B vibe that reeks of tape hiss. Halfway through, the heavily processed emotion of Elite Gymnastics’ new single “Life/Trap” tears it all up A-side style, paving the way for the breakdown in the second half of the mix. Our smooth outro, courtesy of Supreme Cuts, wraps up the mix in a tearfully passionate out-of-body experience that is strongly reminiscent of a cross between Craxxxsoft’s cover of “Can’t Be Friends” and a Holy Other experiment. Paring my monthly store of good finds down to an easily digestible size this month was exceedingly difficult, so please let me know if you would like me to post a ZIP file’s worth of outtakes. Do tha right thing, and get the playlist here today. It’s free, it’s all perfectly tagged, it only takes a little while to download, and it’s full of only the best of the best music I’ve heard lately. If you like it, share the love, and re-post it on your favorite social network or music thread. Be sure to explore the work by the artists featured, and purchase their albums and merch, so that we can all continue to enjoy these phresh beats.

NIVA - “DIZZY EYES”

I finally caved and decided to make this track an integral part of my recent music collection after my girlfriend made me listen to it repeatedly. While electronic pop artist Niva’s music is typically just on the cusp for me, what with the warm, endearing synth and the sweeping pads, the vocals often come across to me as being a bit too mid-2000’s indie rock. Either way, track five from Feverish Dreams, the second most recent release by Stockholm’s Niva, is a worthwhile game-changer. Oh, and if you’re curious, the bit in “Dizzy Eyes” that pushed me over the edge into full-fledged fandom is the steady, yet subtle woodblock beat. Now you have to listen. Fans of chill indietronic music like Blackbird Blackbird and Passion Pit should enjoy this shining little gem, and the source of said scintillating light is POLY, a massive dump of legit tunes. Aren’t our significant others just wonderful? Do tha right thing as you gleefully download, and make sure that special someone knows just how lovely they are.

I’d like to bring to your attention the work of Russ Davies, an English electro producer. Among other non-electronic acts, he cites the works of Giorgio Moroder and Future Sound of London as influential to his art, not to mention his father and uncle, who were members of The Kinks. Previously operating under the pseudonym Abakus, Davies has since switched to the more radio-friendly nom Cinnamon Chasers. He has several albums and EPs under his belt as both artists, but what caused his music to blip on my radar was his 2009 full-length “A Million Miles from Home”. After downloading the first part of the chillwave playlist I posted yesterday, Cinnamon Chaser’s “Luv Deluxe” just got caught in my head and heart and wouldn’t break free. His music is akin to Anoraak, smooth retro-infused downtempo tunes with Air-esque vocals and a tinge of disco religion. Not chillwave, but as a big fan of chill and IDM, I would definitely recommend Cinnamon Chaser’s “A Million Miles From Home”. For a cheaper price, trim the fat and just grab the “Jetstreams/Luv Deluxe” EP. The best of the best for less! Or grab the new LP, “Science” at their official website or Soundcloud.
