/mu/ Essentials →

It pains me to do this, but any dedicated web-crawler knows that 4chan.org is simultaneously the beating heart and the pulsating asshole of the internet. Thanks to 4chan, we have wonderful things like memes, Anonymous, and share threads. Along with that, we can thank 4chan for the widespread knowledge of things like goatse (I refuse to hyperlink it) and furries. Let’s keep it positive, though, shall we? 4chan’s music forum (/mu/) can be a stellar place to learn about new and exciting genres of music at lightning speed, and often at no cost to you, much to the chagrin of the majority of “businessman artists” out there. In addition to plenty of free quotable Neutral Milk Hotel jokes, /mu/ harnesses thousands of creative and adept minds that are especially good at compartmentalizing artists and works into specific genres. Whilst browsing last.fm’s chillwave threads for the purpose of shameless self-promotion, I came across a collection of PNGs that some brilliant mind up at /mu/ no doubt created in order to best explain the essentials of various genres of electronic music. I’d link them all if I had the time, but for now, I will just link the ones that this blog popularizes. I wish I could find out who created these so I could shake their hand firmly and possibly try to troll them. Clicking each image enlarges it, so enjoy!

TSQ VOL EIGHT →

TEN REASONS TO DOWNLOAD TSQ VOL EIGHT:

  1. You don’t mind that this one doesn’t feature any Com Truise or Pictureplane.
  2. You need a monthly recap on all the best hipster music that’s found its way onto the internets.
  3. You find that you often enjoy remixes better than the original versions of songs.
  4. You really want to show someone something they’ve definitely never heard before.
  5. You want to be in tune with all the subtle nuances of how current artistic music is constantly changing.
  6. You have an hour or so to burn with absolutely nothing to do.
  7. You’re entering a mix submission contest and you’ll do whatever it takes to win.
  8. You just got duped into attending a rave and you need to wash the taste out of your mouth.
  9. You owe one of the TSQ writers for reposting about your equally lonely blog.
  10. You just can’t get enough good chillwave, glo-fi, IDM, and downtempo music.

“Oh my God…It’s full of stars…”

Eschewing the normal radtastic post fulla music, today I’d like to redirect you to a brilliantly written list on Listverse, possibly the internet’s best list-oriented variety site this side of Cracked or Oddee. Featuring a stable editor and army of moderators, Listverse often publishes user-submitted lists, after some tidying up, of course. This particular list, entitled “Top 10 Kubrick Stares” references an odd, but of course oft-used technique by the trailblazing filmmaker Stanley Kubrick: the thousand-yard stare.Evoking a range of emotions from aloofness to heartless evil, the “Kubrick stare” is a motif that begs a certain degree of worship. Waste no time and read this short, but carefully crafted list. The number one entry will blow you away. Afterwards, peep the site some. If you like what you see, consider buying one of their books from their bookstore or at your friendly, local brick-and-mortar bookstore. Do tha right thing!

Whilst listening to a Flux-Rad mixtape, this song jumped right out at me. Pepepiano’s “No Way” is featured on his mini-album “Babes”, available at your choice of price via Bandcamp. Reminiscent of a more whimsical Animal Collective (if you can believe such a thing can exist), Pepepiano literally just started making music available to the internets. Along with that iconic hipsteriffic nostalgic retro feel, Pepepiano sneaks in a new ingredient: the future, with all of its technological and cultural allure. Akin to the sci-fi obsession in the 1950’s, listening to a Pepepiano release feels like listening to a labor-saving device, a juicier, happier Ray Bradbury short story (if you can believe such a thing can exist).

Visit Pepepiano’s Bandcamp for a full-length, a couple of EPs, and an assortment of singles and remixes, or drop by his Soundcloud to stream or download individual tracks. While the majority of it is all free, be an entrepreneur and buy some stock in Pepepiano’s music. It may only be a small step for you, but it’s one giant leap for Pepepiano, so do tha right thing!
