TSQ VOL SEVEN →

This month’s TSQ compilation is very uniform in sound and, as usual, draws from a plethora of different sources, including but not limited to XLR8R, iso50, and Ghostly International. Delving dangerously close to R n’ B turf, “TSQ VOL SEVEN” brings to the forefront the rapidly changing trends in modern art music, such as the burgeoning influence of underground hip-hop, funk, and soul. Par for the course, the mix is largely electronic in nature, boasting a larger than usual selection of short, instrumental downtempo vignettes. This glut of good synth tunes is set off by the aforementioned selection of hipsteriffic hip-hoppy jams. Don’t miss out on Korallreven’s epic new single, Star Slinger’s radical remix of Fixer’s “Swimmhaus Johannesburg”, or the song that’s making Active Child famous. All this and more on “TSQ VOL SEVEN” Do tha right thing and download here now.

Everything I heard by Minks was always mixed way too low, because it had been ripped from some European import-only seven-inch vinyl. While this means that the sound of this brilliantly simple collection of three-and-a-half minute genre-melts was probably stellar, it was also a damn shame for the iPod toters. I realize at this point that a thousand hipster eyes just rolled (that’s five hundred disgusted hipsters; do the math), but nonetheless, I use this to illustrate how unfortunately pigeonholed this very creative band has made themselves. Who knows? Maybe it’s their label’s fault.

Minks’ “By the Hedge” is a hi-fi hipsteriffic take on the gothic, guitar pop shade of today’s independent music. Like a better mastered time capsule from the late eighties/early nineties, this short, but very chill album adds in a swirl of sunlight to the mix. Loosely chillwave, due to the comparative lack of electronic flavor, Minks’ music could nonetheless still ride that fence, as evidenced by the “singing into a tunnel” sound that the vocals takes on in some of the more outro-esque tracks, like “Ophelia”. Arguably the “single” of the album, “Funeral Song”, shows off Brooklyn native Sean Kilfoyle’s decidedly eighties post-punk influence, while the opener, “Kusmi”, fits in perfectly on any shoegaze or dreampop playlist. Bearing in mind the the obvious Joy Division- and Cure-esque tinniness, the entire outing is laced with introspective lyrics, irregular song structures, soft instrumentation, well-picked guitarwork, and the occasional atmospheric synth lead. But don’t let all that fancy talkin’ fool you: Minks’ “By the Hedge” is hipsteriffic as fuck. Do tha right thing and get it on CD, vinyl, or as an MP3 download via iTunes, Amazon, or their very own Captured Tracks label (hint: it’s CT-86).

TOP 25 SONGS OF THE PAST YEAR

15. “Fokionos Negri Street” - Keep Shelly in Athens

“Athens, Greece’s Keep Shelly in Athens make downtempo, Balearic-tinged sounds that sound like what would happen if someone tried to remake Air’s ‘Moon Safari’ to correspond with the present day’s fashions.” — Pitchfork

14. “From Home (Mux Mool remix)” - Tycho

“The convergence of Mux Mool, leader of the new, lost-in-the-beat-orchard Ghostly guard, and veteran brain-sweller Tycho is enveloping and pretty and softly crushing.” — RCRD LBL

13. “Graphics” - Memory Tapes

“Achingly gorgeous dance-pop that captures both the joy of nostalgia and the melancholic sense that we’re grasping for good times increasingly out of reach.” — Pitchfork

12. “You’re Afraid” - Brothertiger

“A neat little work-out in foaming drowned dance-pop euphoria that stacks ebullient layers of sticky synth high on top of insistent drum snaps and squelchy, bass perviness.” — Transparent

11. “Together” - Teen Daze

“Hits a little harder than the dreamy waves he’s been creating. The beats and drumming really pounds on this one. But nonetheless it’s still a gorgeous track that would soothe anyone’s sleepless night.” — Twenty Seven Views

09. HARD MIX'S "DEFAULTS" →

Building on that vintage sound that seems always to be just out of reach, the place of Tiananmen Square Dance’s ninth best album of the past year can only go to Hard Mix, with his most recent entrée Defaults”. Harnessing the worldly savoir-faire of artists like Keep Shelly in Athens and Teengirl Fantasy and then turning it up to 11, “Defaults” amazingly is featured as a completely free download via Dovecote Records. Far from throwaway music, this full-length is jam-packed with spicy, sassy hooks that sound like a time capsule straight outta the Compton of the Eastern hemisphere. Add that he has released a split 7” with Star Slinger, so there’s proof that he’s legit, boi! Featuring a variety of different sounds and moods throughout the industry standard ten-track outing, North Carolina producer Noah Smith plays piano, retro synth, exotic percussion, and stirs in a heaping helping of found dialogue about high times and the high life. Hard Mix’s “Defaults” is music for your first night out at the first port of call on your first luxury cruise. Do tha right thing, and add it to your collection without dropping any fliff whatsoever by clicking here and then following the pertinent directions. Apologies for how lo-fi the Youtube video is, by the way. Hard Mix just isn’t mainstream enough for a higher bit rate upload, I guess LAWL

This video is for Teeel’s remix of Com Truise’s “IWYWAW”, from Com Truise’s debut mini-LP “Cynanide Sisters”. This song was originally posted as an exclusive download for iso50 readers, but here it is on Youtube and The Square Dance for your listening pleasure. While both artists kinda have that computer space eighties sound going on, Teeel is able to flesh out the original jam and add a little stereo friendliness to the mix. If you like this, consider visiting Teeel’s site or Com Truise’s site and picking up a record or two. Com Truise’s sophomore effort “Galactic Melt” will be out July 5th, so do tha right thing!
