RALEIGH MONCRIEF - “LAMENT FOR MORNING (WHITE HORSE MIX)”

RCRD LBL just posted a stellar White Horse re-imagining of Raleigh Moncrief’s vocal experiment “Lament for Morning”. The original version of this electronic song utilizes quite a bit of those glitchy editing techniques to great effect, crafting a whirlwind of triumph out of what appears to be just one vocal take. White Horse then builds upon the original mix with even more clever edits that are simply not to be missed. Not quite sure who this Chelsea Wolfe bitch is, but I guess we coo.

Also, Raleigh Moncreif kinda looks like Adrien Brody. For fans of Björk, Deastro, Lusine, etc.

It pains me to do this, but any dedicated web-crawler knows that 4chan.org is simultaneously the beating heart and the pulsating asshole of the internet. Thanks to 4chan, we have wonderful things like memes, Anonymous, and share threads. Along with that, we can thank 4chan for the widespread knowledge of things like goatse (I refuse to hyperlink it) and furries. Let’s keep it positive, though, shall we? 4chan’s music forum (/mu/) can be a stellar place to learn about new and exciting genres of music at lightning speed, and often at no cost to you, much to the chagrin of the majority of “businessman artists” out there. In addition to plenty of free quotable Neutral Milk Hotel jokes, /mu/ harnesses thousands of creative and adept minds that are especially good at compartmentalizing artists and works into specific genres. Whilst browsing last.fm’s chillwave threads for the purpose of shameless self-promotion, I came across a collection of PNGs that some brilliant mind up at /mu/ no doubt created in order to best explain the essentials of various genres of electronic music. I’d link them all if I had the time, but for now, I will just link the ones that this blog popularizes. I wish I could find out who created these so I could shake their hand firmly and possibly try to troll them. Clicking each image enlarges it, so enjoy!

CORDLESS TELEPHONE →

I need to make the listener aware of this stellar free mix posted by fellow Tumblrer IAM TOM SAW YER. Entitled “CORDLESS TELEPHONE”, this mix bursts with hipsteriffic chillwave/glo-fi jams, introspective downtempo/IDM numbers, and even the oddly snazzy italo-disco tune. If your iTunes library is ironically too full, or you only have time to really meditate on one huge influx of new music per month, feel free to just wait it out for “TSQ VOL SEVEN”, in which I will be more than happy to boil it down to the best of the best. That said, “CORDLESS TELEPHONE” is available absolutely free, and comparable or perhaps even better than the average TSQ monthly playlist, so I say you should do tha right thing and snatch it here, and maybe give IAM TOM SAW YER’s Tumblr a lil’ peek, but don’t get too nosy! Also, bonus hipster points if you can name the film the sampled theme in Kuhrye-oo’s “Old Son” is from? It’s on like Donkey Kong, son!

Everything I heard by Minks was always mixed way too low, because it had been ripped from some European import-only seven-inch vinyl. While this means that the sound of this brilliantly simple collection of three-and-a-half minute genre-melts was probably stellar, it was also a damn shame for the iPod toters. I realize at this point that a thousand hipster eyes just rolled (that’s five hundred disgusted hipsters; do the math), but nonetheless, I use this to illustrate how unfortunately pigeonholed this very creative band has made themselves. Who knows? Maybe it’s their label’s fault.

Minks’ “By the Hedge” is a hi-fi hipsteriffic take on the gothic, guitar pop shade of today’s independent music. Like a better mastered time capsule from the late eighties/early nineties, this short, but very chill album adds in a swirl of sunlight to the mix. Loosely chillwave, due to the comparative lack of electronic flavor, Minks’ music could nonetheless still ride that fence, as evidenced by the “singing into a tunnel” sound that the vocals takes on in some of the more outro-esque tracks, like “Ophelia”. Arguably the “single” of the album, “Funeral Song”, shows off Brooklyn native Sean Kilfoyle’s decidedly eighties post-punk influence, while the opener, “Kusmi”, fits in perfectly on any shoegaze or dreampop playlist. Bearing in mind the the obvious Joy Division- and Cure-esque tinniness, the entire outing is laced with introspective lyrics, irregular song structures, soft instrumentation, well-picked guitarwork, and the occasional atmospheric synth lead. But don’t let all that fancy talkin’ fool you: Minks’ “By the Hedge” is hipsteriffic as fuck. Do tha right thing and get it on CD, vinyl, or as an MP3 download via iTunes, Amazon, or their very own Captured Tracks label (hint: it’s CT-86).
